Background
The Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and the Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD) in Senegal, in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, are offering the African STARS Fellowship Programme. This program aims to cultivate future African leaders in fields such as genomics, diagnostics, vaccine development, and biotechnology innovation.
This fellowship opportunity is divided into the following
Advanced and Translational Training (ATT) Fellowship (4 months)
- Advanced genomics for public health
- Genomic diagnostic design
- Vaccine & biomanufacturing
Young Professional Programme (YPP) Fellowship (12 months)
- Research management
- Innovation & entrepreneurship
- Infectious diseases R&D for diagnostics
- Innovations to enhance patient outcomes in Africa

Requirements for the African STARS Fellowship Programme
- Be born in or currently living in Africa.
- Be 35 years old or younger.
- Hold a relevant degree (Bachelor’s degree minimum, Master’s or PhD preferred).
- Have experience in genomics, diagnostics, biotechnology, or vaccine development.
- Demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to advancing science in Africa.
- Be fluent in English or French (fluency in both languages is advantageous).
- Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
