ABOUT 2024 ISLAMIC DEVELOPMENT BANK (ISDB)/TURKIYE SCHOLARSHIPS
The joint ISDB-Türkiye Scholarship Program provides study grants to overseas students from all ISDB member nations as well as Muslim communities worldwide.
With the help of the Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development (ISFD), the Islamic Development Bank started the ISDB-ISFD Scholarship Program in 2019 with the express purpose of eradicating poverty in the 21 Least Developed Islamic Development Bank Member Countries (LDMCs). Through the Program, academically deserving and economically disadvantaged youth from 21 LDMCs can pursue a technical diploma or a Bachelor of Science degree in medicine, engineering, agriculture, or other related fields at a public university in their home country or one of the member nations of the Islamic Development Bank.
Under the name Scholarship Program for Muslim Communities (SPMC), the Islamic Development Bank introduced its undergraduate scholarship program (SP) in 1983 in recognition of the significance of developing the human resources of the Muslim communities in non-member Countries (non-MCs).
To strengthen the scientific, technological, and research capabilities of Member Countries (MCs) institutions, the Islamic Development Bank decided to establish the Merit Scholarship Program (MSP) for Ph.D. studies and post-doctoral research in applied science and high technology. The program was launched in 1992 and capitalizes on ten years of program experience. Afterward, as it became apparent that 20 of the Least Developed Member Countries (LDMCs) could not profit from the latter, the Master of Science Scholarship Program (M.Sc.) was introduced 1998 as a nourishment program for the MSP.
The Islamic Development Bank committed a whole pillar to the promotion of inclusive and comprehensive human capital development in its Realigned Strategy 2023–2025. The Islamic Development Bank hopes to use capacity-development initiatives, such as scholarship programs, to assist Muslim communities in non-MCs and MCs in addressing these issues. It is also a significant part of the Islamic Development Bank’s mission to advance shared prosperity and economic growth via the global development of human capital via educational investment.
Since the program’s inception, the Islamic Development Bank has given scholarships to over 19,017 students and scholars from 56 member countries and 66 Muslim communities, with a male-to-female ratio of 70:30. This aligns with the program’s goal of assisting Muslim communities in achieving sustainable development.
13,956 students have received awards from reputable colleges in important development fields out of the total number of awardees. Since most graduates have found jobs in prominent positions, are succeeding in their careers, and have significantly aided in the development of their nations, it is heartening and satisfying to know that the Scholarship Programs are fulfilling their intended purpose.
8,995 recipients, or 47% of the total, were given to Muslim populations in Asian non-MCs. 31%, or 5,892, was received by member countries. Additionally, 3,198, or 17%, went to Muslim communities in non-MCs in Africa, while 932, or the remaining 5%, went to Muslim communities in non-MCs in North and South America, Europe, and Oceania.
