JAMB Subject Combination For Major Courses In Nigerian Universities
One of the most common mistakes JAMB candidates make during registration every year is selecting the wrong subject combination.
For instance, if a candidate wants to study Civil Engineering at the University Of Lagos (UNILAG) and selects the use of English, Chemistry, Biology, and any other subject that is not Physics as a Jamb subject combination, that candidate is most likely not going to gain admission into the University or get another different course entirely.
Many students, especially new graduates from secondary school, think they only have to pass their GCE/WAEC exams, purchase their JAMB form, get a mark above the cut-off of the selected course of study, and voila! Admission into their desired university.
However, the mistake of the wrong JAMB subject combination is enough to dash away their dreams of being a university student. The reason for this mistake that can ruin students’ chances of getting admission into university is ignorance and false information.
A lot of candidates do not know but students can always check the requirements directly at the JAMB brochure. Nevertheless, we meticulously bring to you the subject combination of your desired courses.

WAEC/ GCE Subject Combination
However, the mistake of the wrong subject combination does not occur only during JAMB registration, it occurs during WAEC registration where students select/ sit for subjects that do not relate to their desired course of study. This mistake can also ruin the chances of students gaining admission.
As a student preparing for WAEC or GCE, you should have an idea of what course you want to study. So, whatever subjects you want to register for in JAMB, you must make sure you have at least a credit (C4, C5, or C6) in those subjects including any other subject, making it at least 5 credits.
For example, if you want to study accounting, you must have at least 5 credit passes in English language, Mathematics, Economics, Government, and any other subject.
The solution to the wrong JAMB subject combination.
One of the reasons students make this mistake is ignorance and misinformation. As much as parents/guardians are blamed for this mistake, candidates should be blamed too because the information regarding subject combination is available in the JAMB brochure which candidates should have access to.
Every problem has a solution, or so I guess. Although selecting the wrong subject combination in JAMB or WAEC is a problem that can cause failure to gain admission into the university, there is a feasible solution to that.
- Change Of Subject Combination Before JAMB Examination.
If you’re lucky enough to realize you selected the wrong subject combination before your examination, you could go back to where you did your registration or do these:
- Know the correct subject combination. You could swipe up for that or check out the JAMB brochure.
- Go to a JAMB-accredited center and tell them you want to change your JAMB subject combination. Will you pay for this? Of course, you will. However, the price depends on the CBT center.
- Change Of Course
Ironically to the first point, if you figure out after the examination that you had selected the wrong subject combination, you could swipe up or visit the JAMB brochure to check for the course that relates to the subjects you have chosen.
For example, if you wanted to study microbiology but you selected the use of English, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, and Mathematics for the subject combination, you could change your course to Agriculture if the school you chose offers that course and if not, find another course that works with the subjects you had selected.
However, some universities are nice enough to give you admission without you going through the processes mentioned above. The course offered might not at all relate to what you wanted but half bread is better than none. If you are okay with the course, congratulations and if not, you might need to sit for another JAMB examination and hopefully, you select the correct subject combination.
